Scan4you – A VirusTotal Malware Developer Sentenced for Jail for 14 Years. VirusTotal malware like malware scanning service “Scan4You is developed to analyze suspicious URLs and files to detect any type of malware and share them with security community. This sounds very nice however, its developer Ruslans Bondars has been sentenced for jail for 14 years.

On May 16, 2018, Ruslans Bondars a Latvian hacker has been found guilty for a co-conspirator has revealed that he had worked with the Russian law enforcement agency. A Latvian or described as a former citizen of USSR, Bondar, 37 years old, is the developer of Scan4You – a multi-online search engine antivirus service which gives hackers the ability to run their codes by several antiviruses programs to find out if the computer virus they will use will be flagged during routine-security scans and launch them for their malware campaign.

Unlike legal virus scanning services that share data of uploaded files with various antivirus firms, Scan4You informs its users or give users false believe that they can upload files anonymously and not share data information about these uploaded files to the antivirus community.

Bondars and a culprit have been found out to have been operating Scan4You since 2009 until 2016. They are also helping other hackers to test and improve their malware system to inflict hundreds of million dollars of losses on American consumers and firms.

Jurijs Martisevs, Bondars parter was also arrested while traveling to Riga Latvia and deported to the United States and pleaded guilty for same charge back in March 2018. According to the press release by the Justice Department, customers of Scan4You used this service to steal millions of credit card payments from retail stores not just in the United States but across the world up to some $20 billion losses.

It has been found out that hackers use Scan4You to test their malware to steal approximately 30-40 million debit and credit card numbers and other personal data from retail stores in the United States alone leading to more than $292 million losses. Scan4You was also used by another user to develop Citadel, a malware that is widely used to infect more than 11 million computers across the globe. In an estimate, it caused over $292 million losses in the US only.

“Assistant Attorney General Benczkowski said that Ruslans Bondars helped malware developers and hackers to attack American businesses” The Department of Justice and other law enforcement partners did not made distinctions between Scan4You and hackers they help, and they will hold them accountable for all the losses they caused to American businesses and will work tirelessly to made sure justice is served wherever they are maybe.

Bondars has been convicted for three counts including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act as well as computer intrusion with intention of causing damage. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Bondar was not charged with direct involvement in hacking but the US court documents prove that he used malware to steal from online users and trick them to buy his antivirus services they don’t need. Prosecutors also said that Scan4You has inspired many copycats and resulted to same services readily available in the internet.
