Blockchain technologies, such as Ethereum, are best known for their use in cryptocurrencies. A joint effort between Microsoft and Intel has led to the development of Coco framework (Confidential Consortium) which will make Blockchain protocols much more useful to businesses.Blockchain technology

The Coco framework allows for thousands of transactions each second, and multiple parties would be able to access, view and modify data in real time. The applications for logistics, finance, retail and more industries could be huge, and several industry giants have already shown a great interest in adopting Blockchain protocols.

“Coco presents an alternative approach to ledger construction, giving enterprises the scalability, distributed governance and enhanced confidentiality they need without sacrificing the inherent security and immutability they expect.”

Mark Russinovich, Microsoft Azure CTO

The changes won’t be particularly noticeable for many people, and not all businesses will feel a need to adopt the use of Blockchain protocols either. However, for those that do; the best news is that the Coco framework is open source and can be ran from Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing platform.

Blockchain technology isn’t always ideal for businesses, and Coco framework is designed to provide a solution to these problems whilst still retaining the advantage. It will provide scalability, data privacy and centralised control.

Since the Coco framework isn’t actually a blockchain protocol itself, it can integrate with any that the user chooses. This only increases the potential for Blockchain technology in businesses, as the development of new Blockchain protocols designed from the ground up for specific needs could be encouraged as businesses will be able to rely on the safe environment provided by Intel and Microsoft’s security solutions.

The Coco framework could be set to become an invisible but ever-present aspect of life.
